Background of the Study
Urban Pidgin in Nigeria has evolved as a lingua franca among the youth, embodying unique phonological processes that reflect rapid social change and cultural dynamism. This study appraises the phonological features prevalent in urban Pidgin, focusing on processes such as tone, stress, and intonation patterns. Nigerian urban Pidgin is characterized by its fluidity, with speakers adapting phonological elements to express identity, humor, and resistance to standard language norms (Obiora, 2023). The research examines how these phonological processes contribute to the distinctiveness of urban youth speech and facilitate communication across diverse linguistic communities. Through the analysis of audio recordings from urban centers, the study documents variations in pronunciation and identifies trends influenced by factors such as globalization, technology, and cultural shifts. The findings are expected to illuminate how urban Pidgin functions as a marker of youth culture and social identity, and how phonological adaptation plays a role in linguistic innovation in contemporary Nigeria (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although urban Pidgin is a prominent feature of Nigerian youth culture, there is limited systematic research on its phonological processes. Existing studies often focus on vocabulary and syntax, overlooking how phonological features contribute to the identity and effectiveness of Pidgin as a medium of communication. This gap limits our understanding of the dynamics of urban youth language and its role in shaping cultural identity. Addressing this deficiency is crucial for developing a comprehensive linguistic profile of Nigerian urban Pidgin and for informing educational and media practices that engage youth audiences (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document key phonological processes in urban Pidgin.

  2. To compare phonological features across different urban youth groups.

  3. To assess the impact of these features on cultural identity and communication.

Research Questions

  1. What are the predominant phonological processes in urban Pidgin?

  2. How do these processes vary among urban youth?

  3. What role do they play in shaping youth cultural identity?

Significance of the Study
This study enhances understanding of the phonological underpinnings of Nigerian urban Pidgin, offering insights for linguists, educators, and media professionals in engaging with youth culture. The findings will inform initiatives aimed at preserving linguistic diversity while embracing modern communication trends (Obiora, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing phonological features in Nigerian urban Pidgin and does not extend to rural or formal speech.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Phonological Processes: Patterns in speech sound production.

  2. Urban Pidgin: Informal language used predominantly in urban areas.

  3. Youth Culture: Social and cultural practices prevalent among young people.
